Sorbian culture in Bautzen
Wjelbik

The designation "Wjelbik" has the sorbian meaning for "small vault" and/or "pantry". Today it is one of the best restaurants in the town.

The corner building was completely destroyed by the consequences of the 2nd World War. For decades it had been a ruin in the heart of the city of Bautzen. After the renovation by the Sorbian National Ensemble in 1977, the building was used as a dormitory with an attached club restaurant for artist. The name "Wjelbik" has its origin in Sorbian and means "small vault" or "food storage". The restaurant got its name because of the 600 year old natural stone vault, which was exposed during the renovation. For a long time the restaurant was only accessible for club members of the Sorbian art and culture scene. So a place of meeting and exchange of ideas developed here. At the end of the 90s the building was converted into a residential building and the restaurant has been run as a family business since the beginning of the 1990s. To this day, the name "Wjelbik" is synonymous with Sorbian hospitality and culinary delights in the heart of Bautzen's old town. Mehr
