Religious sorbian places in Bautzen
St. Michael's Church

St. Michael's Church is one of the most dominant elements in Bautzen's urban silhouette. Today the church is home to the Sorbian Protestant community.

The church is one of the most formative elements in Bautzen. While the Hussites occupied Bautzen in 1429, the archangel Gabriel is said to have appeared here. With his help it was possible to ward off the attack. In thanks the citizens of Bautzen built on this place the chapel "St. Michael". Until the year 1520 the building was extended to the St. Michael's Church. The St. Michael's Church does not have its own cemetery because of lack of space. At that time, the square between the Old Water Art and the church was one of the most important transport links between the Spree valley and the old town. Today the church is home to the Sorbian Protestant community. Mehr
