Religious sorbian places in Bautzen
Church of Our Lady

The Church of Our Lady is the home of the Sorbian Catholic community in Bautzen. Regular worship services are held here in the Sorbian language.

The sacral building, which was located outside the inner city wall , is nowadays mainly used by Sorbian parishioners. The church site at the former Salzmarkt goes back to the 13th century. After the Hussites destroyed the church, formerly known as The Mary's Church, the Church of Our Lady was rebuilt in the middle of the 15th century. Over the centuries, the Church of Our Lady was destroyed several times by city fires and then rebuilt. In the middle of the 17th century the church became the home of the Sorbian Catholic parish of Bautzen. At the end of the 20th century the church no longer had an independent parish. Since then, the Church of Our Lady has been a branch church of the Catholic cathedral parish of St. Petri. A special highlight of the community on Easter Sunday is the riding procession to the neighbouring parish of Radibor. Mehr
