Arnošt Muka Monument
The house was the former residence of Arnošt Muka. A plaque with his face commemorates the laying of the foundation stone of the first Sorbian museum.
At the house number 16 along Weigang Street there is a plaque commemorating Arnošt Muka (Carl Ernst Mucke). He was born in the middle of the 19th century in Großhähnchen near Burkau as the son of a peasant family. After his grammar school education he studied theology, philology and Slavonic at the University of Leipzig. By the end of the 19th century an employment was found at the Bautzen-Gymnasium. Due to his Sorbian-patriotic activities the authorities of Bautzen brought about his dislocation to Chemnitz. Later he worked at the Albertinum in Freiberg, also becoming a professor. In the late 19th century he published the " Sorbian ethnographic exhibition " in Dresden and laid the foundation stone for the collection of the Sorbian Museum.
