Sorbian Institute

Founded in the 1950s, the institute is the research institution for Sorbian language and culture and the seat of the Sorbian archives.

Founded in 1951 as the „Institute for Sorbian People's Research", this institution was assigned to the Academy of Sciences in Berlin until 1991. On the recommendation of the Council of Science and Humanities, it became an independent research institute and is also home to the Sorbian Cultural Archive and the Sorbian Central Library. Until 2014 Prof. Dr. Dietrich Scholze was responsible for the main tasks of the institution. That includes the research of the Sorbian language, culture and history, as well as the further development of the language and culture offers in Lusatia. In addition to numerous projects with various national and international universities and scientific institutions, the Sorbian Institute also hosts the International Summer School for Sorbian Language and Culture.
